Electronic Arts hosted a large press conference today at the start of Gamescom, Europe's largest gaming trade fair. There were some good updates on several games I've been following, including a live demonstration of an Operation (or raid) in The Old Republic.
Below you can find embeds of the videos shown for The Old Republic, Mass Effect 3, Kingdoms of Amalur, The Secret World and Battlefield 3.
First up, The Old Republic. Earlier this week Bioware announced that they have just begun inviting whole guilds to a special testing program for the game. That coupled with the latest showing of the endgame content means that it's really starting to feel like the launch is in sight.
The conference was used to give a live demonstration of the 8-man version of The Eternity Vault, the first Operation (or raid) in the game (Operations will be for 8 or 16 man teams). It was only a short demonstration of the first two major battles, but it's already looking pretty exciting!
Check the video below, or click through for the full 1080p HD version. Note that some of the game is shown using German voice-over as Gamescom is in Cologne. Jump to 2:30 to get to all the juicy raid stuff.
Mass Effect 3 was the next game shown at the press conference. They are pushing the all-out galactic war angle very heavily, and this seems to be the major focus of the game. They also debuted a new in-game combat trailer, which I've embedded below.
Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning was also shown at the conference. Ken Rolston, the renownded developer behind games such as Morrowind is working on the game and gave an amusing and, er, passionate talk. One memorable quote was "FIRE, LIGHTNING AND METEOR SHOWERS!" and the rest of his speech was in pretty much the same vein! Anyway, they did reveal a release date for the game, 10th February 2012 (just in time for my birthday!), as well as a funky new trailer, embedded below.
EA seem to be publishing most of the games I'm looking forwards to right now! Next up was The Secret World, Funcom's new sandbox style MMO set in a modern world where all the conspiracy theories are true. The main news from the con was a new release target of April 2012 and that beta registration will begin on Friday August 26th. This game too was given a new trailer for the show, this time a new CGI short. Check it below.
Finally, there was some more info on a new game I haven't been paying that much attention to; Battlefield 3. I used to play Battlefield 1942 quite a bit with my mates, so I'm aware of the series, but the new trailer EA showed at the press conference really does look like they may have something special on their hands with this sequel. I'll be keeping an eye out for it come release as quite a few of my friends are into multiplayer FPS games like this and I daresay they'll be picking it up. Check the trailer out below.
I'll be detailing all the rest of the news from Gamescom over the next few days.
