Leap, Glide, Crash

It's been a slightly broken week as far as my gaming went. First of all we've been doing a lot of work on the house in preparation for the arrival of our new baby (less than four weeks to go!), including a complete refit of one of the bedrooms. Secondly, my bro Adurj has been without internet access (or even a phone line) for two weeks now, so there has been less of an inclination to log in and play EQ2 as he's not around. Finally my new boxed set of the Lord of the Rings Extended Editions arrived on blu-ray so I've been getting sucked into Middle-earth for the past few evenings.

What time I have spent in Everquest 2 has been spent obtaining the new mounts that were introduced to the game last week. The quests to get the basic versions of the mounts were pretty fun, though not particularly challenging. There are two quests for each mount; an adventuring version and a crafting version. Personally I think the mounts rewarded for the crafting versions of the quests are the best looking, but I decided to do them all anyway.

The first new mount in a leaper, which you can get from level 30 in Butcherblock Mountains. The mount itself looks great, and racing round on the back of a giant velociraptor does look pretty cool. With a press of the space bar the mount leaps into the air and slowly falls back down to earth, allowing you to cover some pretty large distances with the leaps. The ground speed of the mount is +60%, but when leaping this increases to an air speed of +200%. It makes getting round much quicker and a lot more fun! The disadvantage with the leaper mount is that you can't really steer whilst in mid air and there doesn't appear to be a way to increase your falling rate.

The second mount is a glider, and this can be earned from level 60 in Tenebrous Tangle. The mount again looks good; a giant komodo lizard with an unusual gait. This time when you press space to leap into the air you can press it again to release flaps that allow the mount to glide back down to earth. You can cover much larger distances that with the leaper mounts, and you're also able to steer (though the steering does take some getting used to, as I found out myself after several amusing crash landings). Finally you can press space again to fold the flaps back and drop more quickly. Again, the ground speed of this mount is +60% and the air speed +200%.

As well as introducing the two new mount types SOE also overhauled the existing mount system at the same time, upgrading many of the existing mounts. For example, my prowler which previously had a speed of +65% now has a speed of +135% - a nice boost! The overhauled system definitely makes different mounts preferable for different circumstances - for general overland movement my prowler may be quickest, but if there are lots of obstacles my leaper or glider would be better.

The new mounts and mount system have been well received and are another example of the great on-going support the dev team is still giving to a game nearly 7 years old.

Right, that's enough for now, I have the end of The Return of the King to watch (the new blu-rays are amazing, highly recommended!).

  2. Thanks! The mounts actually look a lot better in game than in the screenies - the animations are really good.

  3. Loved reading this! Getting withdrawal symptoms! Still no news on the 'net. I'm about to start getting medieval on folks asses.

4 weeks to go until you're a Daddy again Bro!! WooHoo, can't wait! :)
