Cults and Claymores

A quick roundup of what I've been up to for the last couple of weeks since I finished Dragon Age 2.

I have been playing Portal 2, and have almost finished the game. Look for a full write up soon. If you liked the original game you will absolutely love the sequel.

The rest of my gaming time has been spent back in Everquest 2. I've finally hit level 70, meaning I am now at the maximum level I have ever got a character to in the game (I hit 70 with my bruiser shortly before I quit the game for the first time back in 2007). So I'm basically going to be heading into brand new content from now on, and I'm especially looking forwards to running the Kunark content (Kunark was my favourite area in the original EQ).

Before I head off to Kunark however I have level-locked myself again so that I can finish up a few things first, like my hat quest in Kingdom of Sky and getting my warg mount from Echoes of Faydwer. Plus, I also have the Qeynos Claymore questline to complete.

I've spent the majority of my time in the level 60-70 range running this massive questline with my good buddy Voltaan, and it is a truly epic endeavour.

"Also known by its proper name, Enoxus, this longsword has a mysterious past. Some claim it to be planar in origin. Regardless, the Qeynos Claymore is a very powerful weapon. The length of its magical blade is engraved with Void Glyphs - a form of written language dating back to the dawn of time. The sword was brought into the world of Norrath by Vallius Bayle and presented as a trophy to the ruling human clans of the Plains of Karana long before the founding of the city of Qeynos."

The search for the Qeynos Claymore encompasses some 25 separate quests and begins one of the major storylines that runs through EQ2 lore. My understanding is that the story even continues on into the latest expansion, Destiny of Velious. It's one of the quests in EQ2 that is really worth taking the time to read the lore and quest text as you progress.

The famed Qeynos Claymore, once held by the first Antonius Bayle who founded the city of Qeynos, has been stolen by a Dark Elf and taken to the Overrealm. As you journey through the questline you uncover a conspiracy tied to an ancient dragon cult, the Cult of the Awakened, who seek to waken the prismatic dragon Kerafym the Sleeper.

The true nature of the Claymore itself is not uncovered as part of this questline, though I understand that later questlines reveal it to be the twin sword of Lucan's Soulfire and far more powerful than anyone has guessed.

I have started this questline before, but this has been the first time that I've actually been able to follow the storyline properly. It's a tough quest, taking in the lowest reaches of all the major Kingdom of Sky dungeons, requiring multiple runs through each one. It's good that I have a level 90 bruiser mentoring me as we go along because I could imagine completing this questline with an on-level group could take months (and it likely did when this content was first released). Cheers Volt!

Anyway, I have been having a blast running through the Sanctum of the Scaleborn several times and I'm looking forwards to completing the questline. I really appreciate quests that hook into the lore of the game, so it's been a great way to fight my way to level 70.

Next time, as promised, I'll be posting my thoughts on Portal 2.

  1. Grats on 70 Mere & thanks for sharing.

I've always had the Qeynos Claymore as my #1 Favorite weapon in EQ2 & as I've never done these quests I'll REALLY appreciate you documenting what Volt & yourself are doing.~

  2. Once I've put up my Portal 2 review I'll post a more detailed run through of our escapades (in which we never ever got lost, not once, not ever)! :)

  3. LoL! Hey, you had the map!

Had a load of fun doing the Claymore again with you. I have done it all the way through on Volt before, but so so long ago it's great and as you know there is a lot I don't recall!

Had fun making some headway in to Sword of Destiny questline too last couple of days. Oh, sorry for my connections probs last night. Stormy weather on the Costa kept messing with it.

As for moving on past 70, I must say I'm pretty excited too. Kunark is my fave expansion in both EQ and EQ2, by far.
