March morsels

Blimey, March already eh?

That's actually great news because it means the Dragon Age 2 launch is getting closer!

Right, a few tidbits of PC gaming news then a quick update on my EQ2 progress are in order I think.

First up some great news for PC gamers. Every year we seem to hear about how PC gaming is dying out, and about how the consoles are now the gaming platforms of choice. Well, I never believe a word of it. After all, PC gaming remains the place with the best technology and the only place real gaming innovations are developed. It seems plenty of others agree too, as the PC Gaming Alliance has today revealed that far from being a dying platform, PC games sales reached a record high in 2010, and that it's 20% growth over 2009 means that investment is continuing to pour in to PC games development. This can only be good news for our favourite gaming platform!

Onto other things now. EA are starting to push the new DLC (downloadable content) for Dragon Age 2 before the game is even released. I have real mixed feelings towards the DLC approach Bioware and EA have taken for their most recent games. Much of the DLC for Dragon Age: Origins was pretty worthless, and added little to the game whilst costing a lot. Conversely, some of the DLC for Mass Effect 2 was superb (especially the Overlord, Kasumi, and Lair of the Shadow Broker content), offering real value for money and some great entertainment along the way.

My issue with DLC as a whole is that it can be a great way of adding content to an existing and established game, but when it is being released on day 1 it does feel a little like you are not getting the full package when you purchase the original game itself. Day 1 DLC should be included in the game box from the off, for free in my opinion. It stinks of money-grabbing otherwise! As a way of extended the game experience at a later date it offers quick access to small bites of content for a reasonable price, and I can see it's value in that case.

Anyway, for DA2 it is no real problem as I pre-ordered the Signature Edition, which includes all the Day 1 DLC in the box. Additionally the retailer then sent me an email telling me I was getting £5 off the price, so I feel like I've got a good deal. For games I am not so closely interested it I feel it's worth waiting six months and getting a Gold edition which has all the DLC included as standard, much as I did with Batman: Arkham Asylum and Assassins' Creed 2. DLC used well adds value, but used badly leaves a bad taste in the mouth.

Having said all that, the new DLC does look good though (as the video below will attest)!

Ok, rant over!

Next up, a couple of bits of Game of Thrones news. First of all HBO have released a brand new trailer, which is one of the best yet. See below for the glory to come.

There's a lot to love in this new trailer, with a good look at Jon's albino dire wolf and a fantastic looking Godswood (love the white tree). April seems like an age away!

Also on the Game of Thrones front, HBO have started their viral marketing campaign with the launch of the Maesters' Path website. It's a fun little diversion and quite a tough little puzzle for those who are interested.

I've just finished reading Blood and Gold, which means I only have A Feast for Crows left to read, and then like everyone else I'm waiting on Mr Martin to finish the last stages of this epic tale.

Finally, this week, DoV launched in EQ2. I haven't played any of the content myself, but there have been mixed reviews, and some people have felt strongly enough about the new game mechanisms to leave the game entirely! For myself I still have a long way to go before I get to that stage. I'm now firmly ensconced in the Pillars of Flame. I'm level-locked again at level 60, as I want to finish the DoF content before I move on to the Kingdom of Sky content. There is so much to do in this game I would miss a good chunk of it if I didn't keep level-locking.

One of the additions with the DoV content that has been universally hailed as fun  are the new flying mounts. Again, as I haven't got the expansion I haven't been able to enjoy them, but my old hunting partner Adurj has kindly posted up a great video showing some of the new flying mount content. Looks fun!
