Bits and pieces

There's been quite a few snippets of gaming/MMO news over the last few days, so I thought I'd give a run down on those that have grabbed my interest.

First of all Bioware are going to be announcing their new game on December 11th. You can find a video of the teaser announcement here. There's been a lot of speculation as to what the new game will be, but the current thinking seems to be that it will be a Call of Duty style first-person-shooter set in the Mass Effect universe (possibly a prequel set during the First Contact War). As a huge Mass Effect and Bioware fan I'm really interested to see what it will be. Bioware are known for crafting deep and involving roleplaying games with immersive stories; how this will tie in with an fps game remains to be seen. I have to admit that the thought of fighting off hordes of Turians with my sniper rifle does get me more than a little excited though!

Next up Trion Worlds have announced the official public beta testing program for Rift will be starting shortly. If you want to be in with a chance to help test the game head on over to the official website and sign up. Fingers crossed I'll get an invite!

It seems that the move to a free-to-play model for Lord of the Rings Online has been a success, with game revenues up over 100%, a doubling of subscribers, and a million extra accounts created. If it ensures the continued support of the game I'm all for it. Turbine today announced the latest expansion, Rise of Isengard. Check out the teaser below.

To finish off the news snippets, there is a new Q&A up on the official Star Wars: The Old Republic site with Daniel Erickson. In it he reveals that not only will helmets have a toggle to show them, but that they will use voice processing so that your character's voice sounds different when they are wearing a helmet. Start your Darth Vader impressions now!

On the personal front I've been busy playing EQ2. I have now got Merecraft up to level 29 (I've been running at 50% AA and now have 49 AA points), and also got his crafting skill up to that of a level 38 sage. I had a blast the other night running the Ruins of Varsoon with Udrath and Brynnethe and we can hopefully get back in and start exploring the western part of the ruins soon.

Off for the weekend to do family stuff, but I'll be back next week. Happy gaming!

  1. All good stuff! I must say I'm hoping to bag a RIFT beta key too. I'm raiding tonight (Mon), but if you are about Tues, Uddy, Mere and Brynnethe could go and bash some golems in Ruins of Varsoon..who knows, we may even grace Varsoon with our prescence too!

  2. Yep, should be around tomorrow. I'll bring my golem-bashing stick.
