Age of Roleplaying?

I've been playing a bit more Age of Conan the last couple of days after a hectic week that had cut my playing time down.

I visited Sanctum of the Burning Souls for the first time with a couple of guildies (shout out to Clan Koragg if you're reading!) and had a blast and got some very nice new items as well as completing a few quests and dinging to level 41. Thanks to Sunsia and Aubrecht for the fun!

The other thing I've been doing is some in-game roleplaying. When I decided to try out Age of Conan again, thanks to their free trial (free up to level 20), I decided to start on the Aquilonia RP-PvP server for a couple of reasons.

First of all, AoC is set in a bloody and brutal world and I wanted to get into the PvP side of things again (the last PvP game I played was on one of the EQ2 PvP servers). Secondly I decided to try something a bit different and join a hardcore roleplaying guild (other roleplaying guilds I've joined in other MMOs have all been in the light/medium RP style).

You see, part of the problem with joining Age of Conan now is that almost everyone is at the level cap (currently level 80), and that's where the majority of the PvP (either as minigames or city sieges) is taking place. So, rather than race towards the cap just to enjoy the PvP I decided that taking a hardcore roleplay route would afford a bit more interest in the long grind up to level 80.

Finding a good guild was important, and Clan Koragg are one of the best Cimmerian hardcore RP guilds on the server. They also keep a regular raid and pvp event calendar going. So, I applied to join and haven't looked back since. I'm currently doing my second guild task (all new members have three tasks set for them by their mentor before they are finally allowed full membership). My first task was to join an in-character roleplay patrol of the lands around the guild city (this is something they do regularly anyway and is a lot of fun, challenging any non-Cimmerians we find on the road). My current task is to slay 10 enemies in pvp and bring their heads to my taskmaster. It's all good fun, and the roleplay makes the levelling process seem much less grindy.

The clan has an in-character guild meeting every week, and I'm still only just getting to grips with the various convoluted and interesting storylines that are being played out. Unfortunately I joined just after the recent guildwar with Clan Fearghal, which I'm sure would have brought back memories of the old guild wars in EQ1.

I'll post some of my general thoughts on AoC as a game in the near future. If you happen to play and are on the Aquilonia server make sure you say hi to Udrath, the grumpy old Cimmerian. I might even stand to buy you a drink ;)

  3. Of course not! In fact, to be fair, I think you may have mentioned it in passing a long long time ago.

It's great to see old Uddy is still out there. :)
